corn on the cob
Went to the store this morning and got some corn on the cob. Came home and shucked it and got it cooked, made some sloppy joe to go with it and as I was sitting there eating it it brought back all these memories of when I was a kid. I had an uncle who was a farmer. Acutally, my great uncle Donald. He passed away at the end of last year, cancer. He’d been fighting it for awhile and it finally took him. He was my grandma’s brother, their father had owned the farm, when he passed away it went to my grandma’s brother. When my uncle passed away it went to his son, Doug. And now it’s Doug and his son running it. It’s a nice family thing going on there. My uncle mainly grew field corn, I think he sold most of, maybe kept some for his cows when he had them, I’m not sure. but he always grew a patch of sweet corn too. Every summer when the corn was ready he’d go out and pick it and then me, my grandma, her kids, my cousin’s, we’d all go over there and spend the entire morning shucking corn. Everyone got a lawn chair and we’d sit in a big circle shucking the corn. Even my great grandma shucked it, I also remember way back when my mom was there too. Everyone pitched in to work on the corn. There was a huge cast iron pot, like you’d see a witch brewing something in. The guys would light a big fire out side and put the pot over it, fill it with water and cook the corn in it. After the corn was cooked, they’d put it in to cold water, then they’d bring it over to the lady’s who had these corn cutters that cut the corn off the cob. Once the corn was off the cob it was my job to put in plastic boxes which it’d be stored in in the freezer. That was the best corn I’ve ever had, canned corn is really crap compared to that fresh cut corn. I’ve never found anything that even comes close to being as good as that was. My dad refuses to even eat corn anymore because it’s not as good as Uncle Donald’s was, lol. For lunch on that corn shucking day we’d usually have sloppy joe and corn on the cob! I don’t recall ever having a sloppy joe, I’d fill up on corn.
